Shelf Life

The shelf life of live mealworms depends on how they are stored:

• Room temperature: Mealworms can be stored at room temperature for 3–4 weeks, after which they will begin to transform into pupae.
• Refrigerator: Storing mealworms in the refrigerator at a temperature of around 45°F to 50°F can delay their metamorphosis for 6–10 weeks. To keep them healthy, take them out once a week and let them warm up to room temperature for a day. Feed them vegetables like carrots, lettuce, or apple, and return them to the fridge.
• Freezer: Freezing mealworms will kill them in all stages of development.

Note: Mealworms are the larvae of darkling beetles. At higher temperatures, they eat faster and transform into beetles more quickly.
